Comparison table: every route, by university and by language

There are six Romanian universities regularly mentioned to European applicants. They do not offer the same programmes, nor in the same languages, nor at the same prices — and the gap between what recruitment agencies advertise and what the universities actually publish is sometimes considerable.

This page lists every programme, in every language, at every university, with the number of places and the 2026–2027 fees. The data comes from official admission pages; the methodology and sources are set out at the foot of the page.

The 30-second summary

  • Medicine in French: 4 universities out of 6. Cluj, Iași, Timișoara and Târgu Mureș. Neither Bucharest nor Constanța.
  • Dentistry in French: only 2 universities. Cluj (75 places) and Iași (100 places).
  • Pharmacy in French: only 2 universities. Cluj (80 places) and Bucharest.
  • No UMF trains vets. That programme belongs to entirely separate institutions, the USAMV / USV.
  • Constanța has no French-language programme at all, contrary to what many sites claim — pharmacy included.
  • Total French-language places open for 2026–2027 exceeds 700, spread across four cities.

🩺 Medicine — 6 years

360 ECTS, the Doctor-Medic degree, automatically recognised throughout the European Union (Directive 2005/36/EC, annex V.1).

💡 The big development of 2026: Târgu Mureș is opening its first French-language medicine stream (ARACIS accreditation of 2 April 2026) and charging €8,000/year — €2,000 less than its own English stream and than Cluj. Over six years that is a €12,000 difference against Cluj. In exchange, you would be the first cohort: no alumni, no course materials proven in French.

Total French-language places in medicine: 540. Total in English: 820 (including Novara and Hamburg).

🦷 Dentistry — 6 years

360 ECTS, the Doctor-Medic Stomatolog degree, also covered by automatic European recognition.

🦷 French-language dentistry exists in only two cities: Iași and Cluj. And counter-intuitively, it is Iași that offers more — 100 places against 75 — and for €1,000/year less. If dentistry in French is your goal, your shortlist fits on two lines.

Total French-language places in dentistry: 175.

💊 Pharmacy — 5 years

300 ECTS, the Farmacist degree, automatically recognised across Europe. This is the programme most poorly mapped by guidance sites: errors are common.

⚠️ Two traps to know about. 1. Cluj and Bucharest teach pharmacy in French but not in English — the opposite of what you’d expect. An applicant wanting pharmacy in English should be looking at Iași or Timișoara, not Cluj. 2. Many sites advertise French-language pharmacy at Constanța. It does not exist: the Ovidius Faculty of Pharmacy offers only two programmes, both in Romanian. Verified directly with the university in August 2026.

🐾 Veterinary medicine — the odd one out

Veterinary medicine · the six UMFs

UniversityVeterinary programme?
UMF Cluj-Napoca❌ — belongs to USAMV Cluj, a separate institution
UMF Bucharest❌ — belongs to USAMV Bucharest, a separate institution
UMF Iași❌ — belongs to USV “Ion Ionescu de la Brad”
UMF Timișoara❌ — belongs to USV “Regele Mihai I”
UMFST Târgu Mureș❌ — no veterinary faculty
Ovidius Constanța❌ — no veterinary faculty

This is a structural confusion worth clearing up once and for all. In Romania, veterinary medicine is never taught at a UMF. It belongs to the universities of agricultural sciences and veterinary medicine (USAMV) or the life sciences universities (USV) — institutions with entirely separate recruitment, timetables and fees.

At USAMV Cluj, admission to the French and English streams rests 100% on your school-leaving average, with applications from 18 May to 22 July 2026 and results on 23 July. The application fee is €200 and confirming your place costs 10% of the annual fee. The fee ranges above are indicative: they vary by institution and by EU / non-EU status, and should be confirmed with the university you are targeting.

💶 Tuition fees: the real ranking

Advertised fees tell only half the story: the additional fees — application, language test, place confirmation — range from €200 to over €5,000 depending on the university, and they are almost always non-refundable.

💰 The maximum gap across a full medical degree exceeds €12,000 between Târgu Mureș in French (€48,000) and Cluj or Bucharest (€60,300). For a strictly equivalent European qualification. The cost of living pulls the other way: Cluj is the country’s most expensive university city, Iași and Constanța the most affordable.

🎯 The one structural difference in the group: Timișoara is the only university imposing a written exam on its international applicants. If you’re coming from a non-science school track, or you have little time left to prepare a biology test on the Barron’s syllabus, that single criterion can be enough to reorder your shortlist.

🔍 Methodology and sources

We don’t copy recruitment agency fact sheets, which are the main source of the errors circulating about medical studies in Romania. Every line on this page has been taken from an official admission page published by the university itself for the 2026–2027 year.

Our three rules:

  1. A primary source, or nothing. The figure comes from the university’s admission page. Where it comes from an official relay — the Romanian specialist press reporting a ministerial order — we say so.
  2. Uncertainty is shown. A programme advertised by third parties but absent from the official documents is marked 🟠 “to be confirmed”. An unpublished quota is written “n. p.”, never estimated.
  3. Errors are corrected in public. When we discover one of our own fact sheets was wrong — as with French-language pharmacy at Constanța — we say so on the sheet concerned.

What we couldn’t obtain: UMF Carol Davila in Bucharest, UMFST Târgu Mureș (dentistry) and Ovidius University of Constanța (dentistry) do not publish a quota per international stream. We have written “n. p.” rather than putting forward a figure. If you’re targeting one of those programmes, write to the university’s international office: the quota is given on request.

Data verified on 1 August 2026. Fees and quotas are set each year by the university senates and can change: always confirm with the university before committing to an application.
