UMF Victor Babeș

🏛️ Overview

The Victor Babeș University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Timișoara (UMFT) came into being on 30 December 1944 by decree-law of King Michael I of Romania, which established the “University of the West” including a Faculty of Medicine. The official inauguration took place on 15 July 1945 with 488 students. Since 2001 it has borne the name of the celebrated Romanian microbiologist and pathologist Victor Babeș.

Located in Timișoara, capital of the Banat and Romania’s westernmost city, UMFT stands out for its strategic geography: a few hours from Budapest, Vienna and Belgrade, in a region historically oriented towards Central Europe. Timișoara was European Capital of Culture in 2023, which accelerated its modernisation.

UMFT is a human-scale university — around 8,100 students in 2024–2025 — which allows more personal supervision than at the Bucharest or Iași giants. It has a well-established French-language medicine stream of 90 places, with competitive fees at €9,000/year.

Its distinctive asset: Timișoara is probably the most “Western” Romanian city in its way of life, its Baroque and Art Nouveau architecture (nicknamed “little Vienna”), and its historically multicultural character (Romanians, Hungarians, Germans, Serbs). It is also a major technology hub (nicknamed “the Romanian Silicon Valley”), which makes it easier to bridge medicine, engineering and digital innovation — an asset for students interested in medtech and AI in healthcare. The city was European Capital of Culture in 2023, which accelerated the renovation of its public spaces and cultural institutions.

📋 Programmes available by language

Timișoara made the opposite choice to Cluj: only one programme in French — medicine — but a complete English-language offering across all three programmes.

⚠️ Timișoara is the only one of the six UMFs to impose a genuine written entrance exam on its international applicants. The other five recruit on the strength of your application (sometimes with an interview). Here, “type III” admission involves a biology test — based on the Barron’s textbook syllabus — plus a language test. This is not a detail: it is the factor that should weigh most heavily in your decision if you are coming from a non-science school track or are short on preparation time.

On French-language pharmacy: several Romanian admission platforms advertise 60 pharmacy places in French at €8,000/year. UMFT’s own official type III table, however, lists pharmacy only in English. We therefore mark this programme as to be confirmed and recommend writing to international@umft.ro before building an application around it. We would rather flag a doubt than copy across an unverified figure.

Veterinary: not offered at UMFT. Veterinary medicine in Timișoara falls under USV “Regele Mihai I”, a separate institution.

Structure of the programme:

• Years 1–2: preclinical cycle in French — anatomy (with dissection), cell biology, biochemistry, physiology, histology, biophysics. Laboratory practicals.
• Year 3: clinical transition — semiology, pharmacology, pathological anatomy, immunology. First hospital placements.
• Years 4–6: clinical rotations across Timișoara’s 25 university clinics and those of neighbouring towns (Lugoj, Deva).

Distinctive features:

• The French stream has a dedicated French-speaking teaching body.
• A French test is run by the university for applicants without formal certification (€150).
• Erasmus+ mobility available with partners in France, Belgium, Germany and Austria (the geography helps).
• UMFT operates at a human scale — smaller cohorts, closer supervision.

From which year: clinical placements from year three, following the standard Romanian model.

Quality of placements: satisfactory, in the upper range of the Romanian UMFs. Timișoara draws on a significant regional population (the Banat, several counties), which guarantees a diversity of clinical cases. The university clinics have benefited from modernisation investment in recent years, notably through European regional development funds — several departments were renovated and re-equipped between 2018 and 2025. Proximity to the Hungarian border also allows cross-border exchanges and optional placements in Hungary or Austria through Erasmus+. The county emergency hospital, though sometimes stretched as all Romanian public hospitals are, offers enough case volume for solid clinical training. Placements in paediatrics (Louis Țurcanu hospital) and infectious diseases (Victor Babeș hospital) are particularly well regarded.

🏠 Student life in Timișoara

Timișoara (320,000 inhabitants) is Romania’s third city and the most “European” in its Baroque architecture, pedestrian squares and historically multicultural atmosphere. As European Capital of Culture 2023, the city invested heavily in its cultural infrastructure. It has around 50,000 students.

Housing:

• UMFT halls of residence (8 halls): ~€80–150/month
• Sharing a flat: €150–250/month per person
• Studio flat: €200–350/month

Estimated monthly cost of living: €500–700 — very reasonable.

Transport: buses, trams and trolleybuses. A well-developed cycle network. Timișoara international airport (TSR) with direct links to several European cities (including Paris, Milan, Munich and Barcelona in season). Budapest is 3 hours by car, Vienna 5.

Atmosphere: a very pleasant student city, clean and safe, regularly cited as one of the most liveable in Romania. Lively terraces and cafés, festivals all year round, an active nightlife. Being close to Central Europe makes weekend trips easy (Budapest, Vienna, Belgrade). The international student community is smaller than at Cluj, but well established.

✅ Recognition

The UMF Victor Babeș degree is recognised automatically throughout the EU under Directive 2005/36/EC. The university is accredited by ARACIS and its programmes conform to ECTS standards.

• Fewer direct flights to Western Europe out of season (check connections via Bucharest or Budapest)
• Pleasant though the city is, it remains less busy than a European capital — some students find it quiet
